Red Carpet Fashion: Met Gala 2016

The 2016 Met Gala was last night, which means it’s time for another fashion post! Last year’s China-themed event was pretty fascinating for many reasons (I personally thought most of the celebs did a surprisingly good job avoiding Orientalism, though the Met’s written materials could’ve been more critical). This year’s theme was “Manus x Machina”, with Apple sponsoring and a “Tech White Tie” dress code. I was a little disappointed–by and large, people seemed to be interpreting the technology theme rather tritely as “silver sequins.” There weren’t really any standouts to the level of Rihanna in Guo Pei, but my favorite looks were those that were true to the futuristic theme without resorting to the obvious metallic ‘n’ Balmain aesthetic. These include:

Nicole Kidman

Lupita Nyong’o (in a look inspired by Nina Simone and The Matrix!!)

Emma Watson (for the eco-tech interpretation of the theme!)

~Updating this post for one last entry: I always hope to see some of the men going a little bolder than the usual standard suit. I’m not totally sure what’s up with the short pants, but I was still ecstatic to see the always-dashing Michael B. Jordan in this:
