Poetry in Motion: Anna Mozart

Mandarin mermaids

marinate

beautiful bubbleheads,

with hearts as inconstant as the

colors of their tails—

fragrant as a symphony,

purple, smelling of happiness,

till sadness

shifted the scent

China red, like

menstrual blood.

weavers, like sea-spiders.

water silkworms,

artists.

many of water’s daughters have

been made to weep,

harvested,

for pearl tears.
